Philadelphia Part 2

Now that we've finished watching the movie Philadelphia, what did you notice about Joe Miller's (Denzel Washington) characters change? Throughout the movie, his actions, viewpoints, and actions shift. Explain to me how he changes and why you think this change takes place.

Secondly, why is it significant that this movie is set in Philadelphia, the city where the Declaration of Independence was signed?

  1. I think that Denzel Washington changed during the movie because of his client Tom Hanks. Denzel used to be Homophobic and not like gay people. He wouldn't care about anything else then his business and his family. When Tom Hanks approached him as his lawyer that's when he started to change. Denzel realized how hard it is for Gays because they get discriminated on so much. I think that Philadelphia was filmed in Philly because of the founding fathers & how Its supposed to be a place of peace. Denzel's character was much better at the end.

  2. I think Jo Miller changed because of Tom Hanks. You could tell in the movie at first Joe didn't really pay much attention to gays. He just payed more attention to his wife and baby and job. But once he met Tom Hanks his point of view for gays started changing. He started seeing how people didn't like gays and how they were treated, which iz probably why he got more obsessed on winning the case.

  3. In the movie Philadelphia, Joe Miller changes a lot. He was very ignorant and did not know much about HIV and how to get it. He did not want to be apart of Andrew's case because Andrew had HIV. Then once Joe learned more and spoke to Andrew again he changed. During the movie, he also hated homosexuals, because he said he was brought up and raised that way.He mentioned the stereotypes about homosexuals during the movie but stopped talking harshly about them and used the topic of homosexuals in the case. He also gains more confidence in the case and gets more energetic because he really wanted to win it. These changes took place because of Andrew. I think Andrew's personality and the situation he was in affected Joe.
It is significant that the movie was set in Philadelphia where the Declaration of Independence was signed because that made Philadelphia a historic place in America. A case like Andrew's changed the law which made it something major in American history. -Yamilet

  4. I think that Denzel Washington changed during the movie because of Tom Hanks. Denzel used to dislike homosexuals but throughout the movie he changed because he saw how Tom Hanks struggled with in his life because of being gay. He started getting a different point of view of homosexuals and he changed his opinion of the gay people. I think that the movie was set in Philadelphia because a lot of history was set in that place and by the case that happened in the movie it made history. -Isayna Baez

  5. I think that Denzel Washington changed during the movie because of his client. At first, Denzel would not like and could not stand people who were gay. Although, through out the movie his way of looking at it started to change. That's when finally he didnt hate gay people anymore. I think that this movie was set in Philadelphia because history was made in this place and it was the place where they made a humongous changed with the trial on the HIV/AIDS virus.

  6. Denzel Washington's character, Joe Miller's personality and his current self changed because of Andrew. Before, when he knew Andrew before he even knew he had aids, he acted differently with him. But, as the time passed by, and he knew that Andre had aids, he felt bad for him, and he knew he needed to do something just to help him out.

This movie probably took place in Philedephia where the Declaration of Independence was signed because , maybe a lot of people didn't appreciate the fact and never really cared. It had to come up to this point where it led to this case, so that people would understand and make sure Philedelphia has a big role in history .

  7. Denzel Washington changed because of his client Tom Hanks. At the beggining of the movie when Tom went to denzel's office that they shook hands and Tom said that he is gay and that he has AIDS he right away moved back and looked at him very different. But then everything started changing because he saw how Tom had to deal with his life been a homosexual and people treating him like garbage and Denzel just thought that every man should be treated equally. From there on he did not hate the gay people. I think that this movie took place in philadelphia because thats where the declaration of independece was signed.

  8. Denzel Washington's character, joe Miller had this thing where he didn't like homosexuals for nothing. At first he kinda had a problems assisting Andrew that's what i noticed but before all that happened and nobody knew Andrews' sexuality they wouldn't have treated him the way they did. He made a big difference in the story because it's an African American guy defending a white man. they both have discrimination problems with all their surroundings. he came out of that shell he embraced the fact that he was going to fight for this mans will.

I think the movie to place in Philadelphia because thats where the Declaration of Independence was signed and i think it was a good place because thats where the laws were conceived. and it's a big part of our history.

  9. The movie philadelphia was great fromwhat i have heard from the first part it had really changed alot my joe millers character effects and changed in the biginning he really didnt no about the virus and did not understand but towards the end he started feeling what andrew felt and really had an effect towards his homosexuality issue.

Also the movie was established and created at philadelphia because philadelphia has many things established on history like the Declaration of Independence and creating one of the to discriminating issues of african american and homosexual coming together to win a debate consumed as a fight for their own right. So they created this on Philadelphia to establish a whole to part of history.

  10. Throughout the movie Philadelphia, you could notice a lot of changes in Denzel Washington character, Joe. In the beginning, when Andrew goes to him and tells him he has HIV he immediately cleans his hands. That showed that he really had no idea of how one could get the virus. He even went to see his doctor because he had touched Andrew. Then when he saw Andrew in the hospital again he knew that he was not in danger. He actually treated Andrew like if he was another normal, healthy human being. Another way that Joe changed through out the movie was that he started out hating homosexuals. He was raised thinking very negative things about homosexuals and that was one of the reasons he did not take Andrew's case in the beginning. Then he started to become more comfortable around Andrew and really showed a change of character. I think that the reason of this change is because of Andrew. Through Andrew he started learning more about both HIV and homosexuals.
The fact that the setting of the movie is Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed is significant because in the Declaration of Independence it said that everybody was created the same. In the movie Andrew was fired because he was a homosexual with HIV. So then that brings us back to the words that were written, everybody was created equal, why did they fire Andrew because of his sexuality?

  11. in the very first part of the movie ; joe changed because he know knew what andrew was living with. Also, because when andrew told joe he had hiv he immediately wash his hands. Which i think is very disrespectful. Now Joe is helping him with his case and really had an effect towards andrews sexuality.

  12. In the beginning of the movie, Joe was acting as a friend to Andrew. But when he saw him, he felt disgusted and shocked when Andrew told him He has AIDS.After that, during the Court scenes, Joe tried everything in his power to help Andrew sue his bosses and get his rights and his job back. -Hector Cabrera

  13. When Joe first saw Andrew, he was treating him like all his customers, once he found out he had aids, he started to treat him different and then he started observing everything he was doing to try and prevent to touch anything that he has touched in the office. Then, he agreed to help him later, after denying his request because he had AIDS. During the process of the case, he spent more time with Andrew, and observed him and he started to change his behavior, and how he felt about Andrew, and people with AIDS. At the end of the movie Andrew having AIDS didnt even bother him anymore, and that shows signs that he had changed the way he thinks about people with AIDS. It is significant that the movie "Philadelphia" was set in Philadelphia where the Declaration Of Independence was signed because, this movie is about a man who loses his job because of his disabilities.

  14. I think that denzel whashingtons character at first treated andrew as a normal person. Then when he found out that he had HIV he strated to back away from him. Also when he found out that he was gay he stept away even further. But as the movie progresses he starts to see what kind of life he is going through right now and he begins to understand him more. By the end of the movie hids character has completley changed. He went from a gay hating scared of the HIV type of person to the its a life style and i feel your pain type of person. Last, the reason i think that the setting of this movie being in philedelphia is that it is the location were they signed the Decloration Of Independence and it states that all men are created equal.

  15. Well throughout the movie Joe has been having character changes. When he found out that Andrew had AIDS he was rude and disrespectful. Then was nice and became a good friend.

  16. Denzel Washington played the character Joe Miller in the movie Philadelphia. His character treated andrew like a regular guy, then when the truth was revealed that andrew had HIV he started neglect Andrew and keep his distance same happened when joe found out that andrew was in fact gay. Further into the movie he starts to realize what kind of person andrew really was and understands where he is coming from. Lastly the setting of this movie is significant because Philadelphia was the place where the u.S made history and we wrote the declaration of independence. Andrew and Joe made history because this was the first court case about this sort of thing that was brought to the general public
